Question about avatars (and now signatures)

In users' profiles, it is stated that avatars cannot exceed 100x100 in size. How are there users with avatars that are larger than 100x100?

My sig is resized. Compare the word "Ghetto" to the one on R.org and you'll find that it's much blurrier.
